At this Advent time, any cursory reading of titles from religious and secular news services will provide articles that explore astronomical combinations that could have resulted in an extremely bright star in 2 or 3 a.d. Christianity Today has one of those articles posted on its website right now. Such information is captivating, but to this point, it's still based on observations and calculations that have to be fine-tuned. In other words, there's no empirically substantiated evidence for the "big star" that can be held with full confidence.
People of faith don't need the astronomical computations to believe. Faith leaps beyond scientific reasoning.
How will you exercise your faith in the upcoming year? Will you believe that 2009 can be brighter and less cynical than this year? How about believing that God can quell international and national battles? Or that Baptists around the world will fearlessly and winsomely share the faith like never before?
How 'bout it?
Let's pray for a strong and influential Baptist World Alliance in 2009, to the glory of the One who came to us under a mighty big star.
